Mothers of Humanity.

A life changing carreer in the devotion of caring for motherhood.

Many of you have heard me give praise to the wonderful sisters of Hertzer Park. Women who first inspired with their work and devotion and later provided much encouragement for me in my work with EchoStars. I affectionately call them 'keepers of the Faith' but they are much more than representatives of devotional faith. They live lives of devotion to others and they are women who go beyond our individual expression of motherhood in their embrace for humanity.

Sister Jenny Kirby is one of these selfless women who often provides guidance for me and has stories of her work that I find hard to imagine coping with. Working with the world's poorest with compassionate care without judgement and with total unconditional love.

Another is Sister Wendy who is well into her senior years and has just returned from South Sudan where she has been working to help establish safe midwifery for the women there. Many of these sisters have stories that make our comfortable lives look and feel very self indulgent. They deserve at the least our deepest respect. They are the mothers to humanity.

But it seems selfless devotion to others runs in Sister Jenny's family. Maybe it was because he had a sister who had devoted her life to others that contributed to Dr Barry taking a career change from being a carpenter and project manager for housing development in PNG to becoming a doctor at 50 and a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Dr Barry Kirby's address this week to the National Press Club about the number of women around the world at risk of dying in pregnancy or childbirth was inspirational for me.  Dr Kirby is working with the Australian charity Send Hope Not Flowers to address maternal mortality in Papua New Guinea.

Dr Barry Kirby is one of the inspirational people of the world making their life work so meaningful and contributing significantly to making the world a better place.

His special Mothers Day National Press Club address broadcast this week on ABC is awakening for us all as a guide to what one person can achieve with only a will and a desire for change. His message is cause for us all to pause this mothers day as we consider what motherhood is and to take a look at it in the global perspective.

I encourage you all to take a moment to view his press club address.
