Literacy and learning

First Term Literacy classes

Literacy class is a very different type of class as part of the Literacy Program started by EchoStars at Bright Stars School.
Every year during admission we find many children who are already over age to start their school in kindergarten class but they are very enthusiastic  and interested to come to school like other children.

They could not start their school earlier at the proper entry level age as they were needed in the family to help their parents in different ways such as: taking care of their siblings, fetching water, helping in tea shops, helping mothers in sweeping house etc. small chores to benefit their families from a very early age. These children now see other children coming to school and life changing through education, so many of them  also interested to come to school like other children.

As part of the programs being developed for the ultra poor with EchoStars, Bright Stars School organized a special class for these groups of children in January 2013. The age group of these children are 9 to 13. They stay in this literacy class for one year and their syllabus is flexible. The aim is to bring up their literacy skills as  quickly as possible so as they will be promoted into the normal class in the new school year. As they are bigger in age than the normal kindergarten group, usually they can complete more syllabus than the regular aged children of kindergarten.

We have found from our experience with the first group that most of these children are doing quite well in normall school in different levels once they pass the literacy year. They actually learn the basic knowledge like reading, writing Bengali, English alphabets and numbers in English and Bengali  as well as basic little words and word groups, sentences, short sparagraph and so on.

These children would not have any chance at all of going to school if EchoStars and BrightStars could not create this sort of special education opportunity. This very little initiative has provided an excellent opportunity of having primary education to these ultra poor children. Through this little step EchoStars and BrightStars are providing light of knowledge to the most neglected children in the society and we hope that some Stars will come out from these groups of children to serve the society.
